Oh my god, I miss my blog
It is the 2 year anniversary of the day I went into labor with Owen and I have such awesome, wonderful and horrible memories from this day/night that it brings tears to my eyes.
First the wonderful: No c-section, Yeah!!, new healthy baby who is one of the most beautiful creatures on earth, Yeah!!, achieving a goal, Yeah!!, winning my husbands admiration and respect, Yeah!!, growing a whole new heart to hold the love for my little Owen in, Yeah!!
Next, the horrible: labor, boo hiss!, labor, boo hiss! labor....you get my drift? :)
It's such an interesting time gauge right now for me. When I look at Owen I keep thinking about how I brought a brand new baby home when Carter was this age. It's so crazy because I remember expecting so much out of him when he was just 2 years old. I thought of him as older in some way or more capable of understanding what was going on and how he was to deal with it emotionall. Coockoo! I look at Owen right now and I think "He's just a baby!!" and it's true! The poor first child is our experimental child. We poor everything into them and expect so much back. Not until we have the 2nd are we almost sane people who then see how silly we've been.
THAT, is the closest I will come to admit to being a bit wacky about my first child. Haha, love it!
Will I blog regularily? Hell no. I have no idea what I will do or when I will have time or what mood strikes me. Will I make false promises? No. It is what it is. We'll see.
and in conclusion....
Happy Birthday Eve to my sweet-cheeked, funny, goofy, shy, cuddly, muncheechee, Owen.

Oh, just some stuff
Carter: I sit in here! (trying to sit in his toy wagon) * FLIP! * Hmmmm. Maybe not...
*****
Last night we introduced 'Duck. Duck. Goose!' for the first time. Not as much fun with only the three of us but, whatever. Carter didn't quite get the "rules" per se but he understood the gist of it all. He mostly just wanted to be "it" and do the duck, duck, goose part then take off running. In fact he wasn't satisfied with just making one of us goose...he would say "Duck, duck, duck, duck.......Goose! Goose!" and hit both of us on the heads, then sprint away, laughing hysterically.
*****
Potty training = Messy, messy business. But really, it's going rather well. Most of the day (as long as we are home) he is going pee pee in the potty. I just replenished my Piece-of-Shit-Toy closet. Good grief, who would have thought that ginormouse, gag scissors would have been such a hit with the under three crowd?
Ahem. We have not tackled #2 yet... Errr, well we haven't gotten it in the potty yet, anyway. It's been in the undies and outside on the doormat. Joy. According to Carter, "It's tooo big for toilet!". Hmmmm.
*****
For smiley bug news... Tooth #2 has arrived! And with it, came a new appreciation for baby oatmeal. We have only been dabbling in the baby cereal department since I've been concentrating on weaning :( but yesterday proved to be the turning point, I think. Most of the time Owen would screw his lips up tight and blink crazily like I was trying squirt lemon juice in his mouth every time I brought the spoon near. Then, all of a sudden, he was like "Hey. This ain't so bad.....GIVE. ME. MORE!" Now my darling little bugaboo can't get that oatmeal in his mouth quick enough. In fact he almost crawls out of his highchair trying to get at the spoon. I forgot how funny this stage was.
*****
Sometimes I will read something that a 2-year-old is supposed to be doing and I'm like "Shoot. I've never showed him that!" or "How come I never thought about that?". Then I feel like a failure mother who is holding her budding genius child back.
Anyway, yesterday I read that they should be drawing simple stick figure representations of people, circles and lines (girls more so than boys). Well, Carter has the circles and lines and "abstracts" down but I've never asked him to draw anybody and he's never tried. Well, darn. Why haven't I suggested that? So we were messing around with sidewalk chalk and I asked him to draw daddy..... hahahahahaha. I wish I could have gotten a picture of it before it was destroyed. I was pleasantly surprised to see him draw a stick body and two stick legs and two stick arms all in the right spots. Then I said "Draw his head" and he said "Okay. Daddy has Biiiiig head!" and proceeded to make a giant, 18-times-larger-than-body head. Then he gave him 2 eyes and a smile. I was proud.

My kids are the bestest
*****
Carter is Don Juan de Marco. He tell's you he loves you all day long and even when he is falling asleep and slurring with exhaustion.
This is how he says it: "I love you too, Mama."
As the day moves along and he gets more tired he just says it more and more. "I love you too, Mama", "I love you too, daddy", "I love Owen, too". Sometimes we can judge how tired he is by how many times he will tell us he loves us. Such a sweet boy.
*****
Last night in the bath I had Owen sitting in front of me playing with the water with the amazement only a 6 month old can have. Carter hopped in and started playing with his toys. Well, Owen (being the big boy that he is now) decided he wanted to play too so he starts wrestling a bath toy from Carter. All of a sudden Owen is a People! Then Owie throws his hands down in frustration and ended up making a really big splash. Carter got all wet and laughed, Owen laughed hysterically, I laughed because they were having fun together. My two boys sat and splashed each other for 10 minutes laughing all the while. The bathroom was a tad water logged but who cares, they had fun.
*****
Dear Owen,
I know you have just discovered your Baby Voice but please, could you keep the blood curdling screams to a minimum? I'm afraid that Child Protective Services will be called by our neighbors and boy, wouldn't that be embarrassing. I know you think it is hilarious to clench your fists, suck in your breath, and let loose an ear-piercing shreek but I'm not sure if everyone else knows you're just testing your vocal range. Is it really that much fun? Your face gets all red and you look very proud of yourself after an exceptionally loud one and I know it makes you giggle but I just don't get it, I guess. Oh well. You can pay for my hearing aids when I get old. Deal?
Love you, Owie Bo. You're my guy.

Spring forward?
Anyway, we did get to hang out with some friends over take out Chinese for a while, which was a nice break (even though our kids fight like two WWF contenders). So the weekend wasn't totally about yard work. Carter got to roast some marshmallows and Owen jumped around in his exersaucer like a wildman. He is definitely gonna be my camping child. He was in the best mood that I've ever seen him at Crabby Time (5-7pm); all smiles and laughs. Woodsmoke should be the new scent for baby care products...so much better than baby powder scent. Haha. ;)
This morning I woke up, got my smiley bug out of the crib, got a running hug from my crazy-haired toddler and started getting ready for Mommy & Me. I couldn't believe it was Tuesday already! I had to reschedule an appointment with the preschool I'm sending Carter to in the fall since I forgot to go on Monday.... hmmmm, wait. Oh crap. Today is Monday, I realize. I'm an idiot. Now I have to call people back at preschool and tell them I'm coming today after all. Geez. Way to make an impression. Also, I realize I don't have Mommy & Me....so what the hell do I do now?
Yeah, it was a longish day.
The Big News: my little man got into the preschool I wanted. Woohoo! I was so worried about getting him a spot in the fall 3 year old class that I didn't have any time to think about what it really meant. So after I hung up the phone I stood there a minute and let it sink in. These are my thoughts:
Ahhhh! He's just a baby. He'll be scared. No one understands him like I do. He's sensitive, they won't realize it. They won't like him. He's too rowdy for school. What if they call me and tell me to come pick him up because he's not getting along with the other students? What if he feels like I abandoned him? What if he won't behave and listen to the teacher? What if he hits other kids? What if he has one of his tantrums and no one else can deal with it like I do? What if he doesn't learn at the same pace? What if he isn't potty trained by then? What if he has an accident? Maybe I'll just homeschool......yeah right.
Yes, immediately my brain sets off on it's Worry Train. *sigh* How do I even get through a normal day...really.
We headed up to the preschool this morning and Carter was very excited to see all the kids doing "school stuff". A nice lady even read him a book from the library cart. He was all cute toddler smiles.
*****
Carter and I play this game where we think of how big we love each other. When Owen is big enough, he'll play too but for now he just coos and gurgles. My sweetie pie. Anyway, tonight it went kinda like this:
Me- I love you as big as the ocean.
Carter- I love you as big as....my Wonder Pets book! (it's a really big book)
Me- I love you as big as the sky.
Carter- I love you as big as.....Daddy's belly! (he thought this one was a good one)
Me- I love you as big as the tallest tree in the world.
Carter- I love you as big as my house!
*****
Owen has been taking a mid day bottle the last few days. One step closer to the end of a very reluctant, although necessary, weaning process (for mommy and baby). I'm proud of him that he is finally taking a bottle but terribly sad at the same time to have had to make this decision in the first place.
Anyway, that's all for now. I do have to say that I am finding it harder to blog nowadays since my oldest doesn't nap and the youngest is now awake a lot more. The only time I get to do it is at night and if I go to bed early or try to clean up my monstrously, messy house, I'm out of blogging luck.

Boy Oh Boy
I just watched some old videos from Carter's first year. I cried. I honestly was taken completely by surprise at the emotions that bubbled up as I watched him blow out his first birthday candle and mangle his first cupcake. I'm a wuss. I can't believe my boy is so big now. Just look at him up there! He's a kid. Now I'm looking at my little Owen like he is going to all of a sudden morph into a three year old and it scares me. I want them to stay babies but yet I want them to grow up. Does this make any sense? No? Good. I'd hate to all of a sudden be sane....it would throw everyone off.
Working on his bike. Hey, I like that wearing safety goggles is a concern for him, even at age two. Think he'll be a mechanic? Hmmm, I'd prefer something a little more Ivy League but if he can save me some money on car repairs.....well, I'll think about it. Especially if I'm driving my dream car in a few odd years. (Don't laugh. It's not very exciting but I really want a Volvo Cross Country.)
Look at my boys, chillin' on the jungle mat. Carter is always very concerned about Owen and tries to make sure that he is entertained. In turn, Owen is fascinated with Carter and usually is laughing hysterically whenever he's around.

Happy Blogiversary
Anyway, I've been blogging for 365 days, officially, trying to capture milestones, snapshots of time, funny moments and special moments. Unofficially I've been trying to leave a little bit of myself for my children to get to know later on. I must admit I've done a lot of venting and I think I may have dropped the f-bomb once or twice. Hmm, I guess the boys won't be able to read this until they are 18 or so. :)
This first month of 2009 has been anything but unusual or boring but I just can't go into it all, nor do I particularly want to considering some of it hasn't been pleasant. However, I do want to say that my little Owen rolled over last week, Carter pee-peed (once, about a tablespoon amount) in his potty and got a present and some M&M's, and we've formed a family band reminiscent of the Partridge Family.
So far Kevin is on piano, Owen is on the "shaker" or tambourine, I'm on the drums and Carter the Rockstar is on guitar....or "guitary" as he refers to it. He can really rock out. I love when he is singing along to the instrumental version of the B-52's Love Shack that it plays; he sounds like this: " ..Shack BAYbeeeee-eeee! Git tooooogetherrrrr!". He also frequently will pull up a stool next to his fussy brother and serenade him with his guitar. He'll say "Is otay Owen, I here."
It's like watching VH1's storytellers, live. Ha. Owen quiets down immediately when his brother plays to him. Very cute.
Anyway, I'm glad I've kept active in my blogging the last year. It does get hard sometimes (most recently). I can't wait to get it all in a hard copy and really preserve the memories. I can't believe how much you forget in just a year! And to think, I was skeptical about the whole Blog thing. Pschh.

My boys keep me laughing, which in turn keeps me sane
Hi Daddy. Daddy? You come home...um, have dinner wi' us? .......... Otay, play ahside wi' me?........... Luf you too, daddy.
*****
Every morning Carter rolls over and murmurs sleepily "Luf you too Mommy"....sometimes before his eyes are even open. He will then silky my arm and hug Owen, whom I am probably nursing in bed at this point. He's too sweet. It makes up for the two toddler, ninja feet I have in my back most of the night.
*****
New Year's Eve, at a friends house doing sparklers for the very first time with Daddy: Kevin explains that you need to hold it very far away from your body like all the other kids. No! Meeeeee! No, Iiiiii doooo it! (Carter then wrestles sparkler away from Kevin and puts it right up towards his own face, Kevin grabs it but takes a hit on the arm.....nicely melting his fleece jacket)
*****
We were putting Carter to bed last night and I realized that my child has developed a new skill. Lying. I had just finished telling him a story about an oversized elephant that was self-conscious about his size and how all of his animal friends each were different in their own way....blah blah blah. (Yes, I'm shooting for my stories having a moral to be learned) My pint-sized guy yawned really big and hugged his Glow Bear, gave me his Wonder Pet to cuddle with and this is the following conversation:
Carter (whispering in his tiniest voice): Mama, stay here. I be riiiiight back.(patting my shoulder in reassurance he started getting up)
Me: No way, Jose. It's bedtime.Carter: I need to get blanket. Um, biiiiiig blanket Santa gave me.....
Me (thinking): Santa never got you a blanket....
Carter: Uh.......yeah....be riiiight back. Get... (searching his brain)....uh, somefing.
Me: Fine. Hurry back then.
Carter: Otay, I hurry. Bery bery bery fast. (He then climbed out of bed, and I let him just to see where this was going. The little stinker tiptoed to the den and told Kevin he was there to watch football with him)
******
When Owen cries, I will hear Carter say stuff like this: Is otay Owen, mama be right back. Or: I right here Owen, no cry... riiiight here.
*****Owen's favorite thing to do is mirror time. We make silly faces and he has baby hysterics. Is there anything cuter than baby laughs? I think not.
*****Carter's favorite games to play: Hide and Seek and Follow Me! When we play hide and seek it's hilarious because he will hide in some of the most obvious places. Some of our favorites include laying on the carpet with a throw rug over his face (classic), or standing next to the bed with the comforter pulled over his head so that all you see is his tiny body quivering with suppressed laughter. Plus whenever he counts you have to run like hell to find a spot because he starts chasing you before he's reached ten. No patience this kid. The other game is more like follow the leader but it involves a belt of some kind or a rope. He takes one end and starts walking around. You take the other end and follow him. The funny part is that he tells you how to follow him, ie. "walk dis way" or "step here and then here, mommy". Ahhh, my little Stalin.
*****
Me: Carter, do you want to play with your friend so-and-so tomorrow?
Carter: Yea! She es me Faaaave-weet! (hugging his chest and swinging side to side)
*****
The most common expressions currently in use around our house are:
Soo. Much. Fuuuun!
_____ (insert, friend, book, toy, food) es my Faaave-weet!
Do you looove it? or Daddy/Mommy/Baby Owen looove it!
I berry, berry, berry sorry, Mama.
Let's go berry, berry, berry fast!
Luf you too, mama. (usually out of the blue and involving a hug on the leg or arm)

Oh the funny things he says and does
Carter- "Build house, Mama!", digging with his shovel in the sandbox.
Me- "You're gonna build us a house?"
Carter- "Me build, Owen build, Dada build, Mama build us house!"
Me- "Are you gonna go into construction when you grow up? Are you going to own a flourishing construction company?"
Carter- All smiles he says, "Yeah, like dada fooo-lish!"
Hahaha, out of the mouths of babes.... :)
*****
Carter likes to "rescue" snails when he is outside. Ya know, those really small ones that kinda end up dying or drying up on the patio. He arranges them into family groups on the table and they are his pets.
So today it's windy and his Mama snail, Dada snail and baby snails kept on blowing off the table.
Carter- "Aahhhhhh! Save you shail! Hold tight!" gripping them close. He gently places them back on table but wind blows the smallest one away again.
Carter- "Ohhhh Nooooo! Baby go home.", pouting... "Shail go far, far, far, far, far, far, far away...." , followed by grumpy frown.
*****
Me- "What do you want to do today?"
Carter- "Ummm... Cook!", jumping up in the air with hands raised like it is the most ecxiting thing he could think of.
Me- "Okay, what do you want to cook?"
Carter- "Pupcakes! Pink pupcakes. Spin rooound!" making stirring motion with his hand (referring to the hand mixer).
It's a good thing that one of his christmas presents from Grammy and Papa is a K-I-T-C-H-E-N. This is the only way I can refer to this item nowadays, spelling. We spell everything. I actually had to stop myself spelling to Kevin during a conversation and Carter wasn't even in the room. In fact, he was sleeping. This is Parent Conditioning.
*****
I have the politest child on the block, now. He says Please and Thank You for EVERYTHING. All day long recently I hear "Tank you mama!" and "Pleeeeeease, mama? Pleeeeease?" with hands clasped desperately to his chest and knees bent in a type of begging crouch. We are also abusing the "Sooowrry mama" accompanied by the chin-to-chest pout. I have even had to tell him to not apologize because I'll stub my toe or something and he will apologize to me like it was his fault. Geez louise. I hope we are not giving him a complex.
****
Watching the Wonder Pets...
Pets singing "...this is Seeerious!"
Carter- "Seeerious!" singing back to the them.
*****
Carter walks into the kitchen the other day and says "Mama, tuhmmy gwowl"
Me- "huh?"
Carter- "tuhhmmy gwowl! Me hungy"
Me- "Ohhhhhh, hahahahahaha. Your tummy is growling and you are hungry??"
Carter- "uh huh, Hungy! Now!"
Where do they learn some of this stuff?
*****
Carter recently re-discovered his "practice" baby doll in the pile of toys.
Carter- "Baby Owen doll!"
Me- "Is that your baby?"
Carter- "No. Owen!"
Me- "Ahh"
So he starts talking to the baby "Owen" and putting him in the swing, "You like swing baby Owen? You like?"
Then he takes him out and carries him to his bouncy chair, "Owen you like toy chair? Baby chair like?"
Then he gave the doll a teddy graham and walked away; nurturing period officially over.
*****
And to cover both kids.....
I must say that Owen slept last night from 8pm until 5am. This was confusing to me when I woke up and looked at the clock. I thought I was dreaming.
My littlest munchkin is of course the sweetest thing on Earth and I always want to remember how he says he loves me with his full body wriggle, gummy smile and giggle. So damn cute. He's truly a lump o' sugar.

I've lost that bloggin feelin
Basically, this is a filler blog entry so that I don't feel like a total slack-ass.
So Carter got his arm stuck in a ball popper toy tonight at a friends. I'm nursing Owen in the other room and I hear my darling child screaming for "Momma do it!" to fix the situation. So sure enough my girlfriend comes carrying him into the living room to me like he has been wounded on the battlefield with his arm still stuck in the toy. Hilarious. My poor munchkin. He was so sweet during the time we were over there...he kept on asking me where baby Owen was and going to check on him. "My baby?" he'd say and pat the carrier. He's like a mama duck checking on her eggs. Tonight he gave him lots of hugs and fell asleep cuddled up next to his baby while silky-ing my arm.
p.s. Carter's eyelashes are 3/4 th's of an inch long. I kid you not.
Owen slept all day long. I actually had to jiggle him to make sure he was still breathing. Does a mama ever stop worrying about this? My sweetie pie. I just hope he sleeps his usual shift tonight. But when he did wake up he woke blowing bubbles and smiling at me. He loves cooing and talking to me, especially when it's really quiet and it's just me and him. Sometimes I see him laughing at his brother. :) Love it.
Adios for now. I'm tired and I need to recharge with a little Jon Stewart or mindless VH1.

My boys
"Sure, sit on the couch", I say.
So he plops down and I set Owen in his lap while I also give a little baby head-support.
He pulls out his Chuck E. Cheese gold medallion that he is wearing and dangles it over Owen, "Like? Baby? Like ChuckCheeeese? Baby Owen? Like?" (he is very caring)
He then removes medallion and "gives" it to his brother. Since Owen isn't exactly grasping this exchange he says "Off!" and gets up to put the medallion in the baby's bassinet. Then he turns and says "More hold baby!".
All the while Owen is just kicking and smiling.
Damn cute kids I have.
*****
Kevin has these long-john type pj's for the winter...like the old west style with the butt flap. Ya know the red ones we all had as a kid in the north? Anyway, Carter has two pairs of jammies that are one-piece and red. (one is a detroit red wings and the other has some trucks on them) So he calls them his "Like Dada" jammies. God forbid they be in the wash on the nights he needs to dress "Like Dada!!!".
Tonight he has his Red Wings jammies on until he saw me put on my blue winter polar bear set. Now he is trying to undress himself and saying "No like Dada....Like Mama!!! Blue bears like Mama!!"
I told him I would buy him some blue bears tomorrow. Oh yeah, like we need another set of jammies....I think we have 5. That is quite enough in my opinion.
*****
Tonight we put on the DVD Crackling Fireplace and some Christmas music. We danced in the living room and sang Jingle Bells and I told Carter not to touch the TV because it was "Hot". (teehee, I'm a bad mother messing around with him) He got serious and nodded his head then tentatively walked up to it and blew really hard....to cool it off, I guess. Haha. Anyway, I told him I was joking and that it was a TV fire so it was cool. As if he didn't believe me he slowly put his hand on the screen and then looked back at me and laughed....in relief?
*****
Owen smells so gosh darn good I could just inhale him all day. That child is truly a sweetie pie. Kinda makes me think about a third......just kidding.
He loves to smile and "talk" to me when he is on his changing table and he grips me with his long fingers like a baby monkey. I love it. I think he actually said his first word the other day..... "Hi". Haha. I leaned in and said "Hi" and he squawked "Hi" right back. It was funny and I had to call Kevin in to tell him we had a genius child. Only 6 weeks old and talking...that's a record, right?
I'm afraid he doesn't do much yet to blog about but he is still trying to make sense of us crazy folk. Poor thing, being born into this Madhouse! :)

Who the hell knows. I'm half asleep.
My guys wore me out today in alternating screaming matches. It was quite an opera.
Anywhoo, for the sake of historical blogging context, the news is full of some crazy crap right now ever since Obama won the '08 election. I find myself half rolling my eyes and half nodding my head. The funniest thing for me is that I never told anyone how I voted; not even my older sister or my husband. Now if they asked me I suppose I would tell them....or maybe not...but I find it humorous to hear their opinions of how I would have voted. My sister the Republican says she is pretty sure she knows who I voted for (meaning she thinks I voted Democrat) and my Liberal Democrat husband says he thinks we are a House Divided (meaning he thinks I voted Republican). Hmmm. I wonder who knows me best....
I guess I'm pretty middle of the road so it's hard to guess. :)
Now. On to the stars of the show.
Owen has become super-strong baby and he is such a sweetie pie. He actually will just lay there sometimes and "hang out". I find this extraordinary when I compare how Carter was at this age. Poor Carter had reflux and colic and who knows what else but he cried unless I was holding or nursing him. Owen is fine just laying by himself. Sometimes I'll catch him smiling and "talking" to himself. Funny. He recently started the baby squawk/laugh. I love it. I've officially fallen head over heels in love with him. Last night he went to sleep at 8pm and didn't wake up again til 2am...this is nice. He has been pretty predictable in his sleep patterns already. This is very good. I must thank him when he is older. Carter didn't do that...ever....well, until he was fully weaned at 15 months. They are so different.
Just the other day I was showering and I had a flashback to my early baby days with Carter. Here I was just showering in peace while Owen sat in his bouncy and looking around, Carter was playing and Kevin was doing laundry.... and I'm remembering.... This doesn't sound weird to most of you but I must reflect on those days with my oldest youngster and I laugh because I couldn't even shower until the evening time when Kevin got home. He would hold Carter and walk him around while he screamed just so I could have 10 minutes to myself. I couldn't even put him down long enough to shower without the earsplitting, choking screams! Wow. I must have been a wreck. Here I am with two now and it is so much easier in some ways. That makes no sense but I'm not arguing. I'm just happy things are the way they are.
Carter has been showing his brother lots of love lately. He is getting much better at being gentle with him but sometimes he wants me to put Owen on "da otter side" so he can get the good mama cuddles in. I try to accomodate his needs; my poor sensitive child.

Settle down!!!!! Everybody!!!
I'm not sure how to work with these kids yet. Owen will be crying and Carter will be lovingly trying to "soothe" him by standing over him, screaming "Isss Otaaaay Baaaaby!" and shaking maracas or a tambourine or something. This who can scream louder tactic doesn't really work to soothe the newborn, however. So Owen is red-eyed with sleep deprivation.
Then we have the toddler, who is bouncing off of the freakin' walls every afternoon. He refuses to nap unless he is held down in a headlock in bed for a couple of hours until he dozes off by sheer accident. So I've implemented "Quiet Time". No TV after 2pm. This is my attempt at down time for his little brain so he won't wake up with night terrors. Anyway, no TV means he wants to hang with mommy and Owen in the living room....meaning Owen definitely gets no sleep now, even when nursing because Carter jumps all over mommy, the couch, "vacuums" and moves the furniture, throws his toys "HIGH!" (grrrrrrr) and generally causes a spastic ruckus. My nerves are shot.
Today I piled them both in the car for a post office drop-off and the scenic route home. Yes. I'm back to trying to get him to nap in the car....and ya know what? It worked. So there.
I will not make this a habit, though. We just can't afford to nap him this way!!! haha.
Okay, off to soothe the little one while the older one is crashed out. Sigh. Who will soothe me?

The adventures of the Lame-o's
I cannot stand being cooped up, either. I have cabin fever. Very frustrating.
So Carter is asking me "Mama? Home? Pleeease?". This means Mama, can we please go out? For some reason he says "home" for going somewhere...I think because we say "let's go home" when we are out? I'm assuming he thinks "go home" means to go somewhere. Shrug. Who knows. Anyway, my poor under-stimulated Little Man is begging for an outing and I'm thinking Well, we are all dressed. Let's try it...but where?
Without a destination I throw the children in the van and start driving. Eureka! Drive thru's! Aha!
"Want a doughnut!?" I say. Of course I hear an excited "Yeah, uh huh!" from the back. Okay, Krispy Kreme drive-thru it is.
"WAAAAAAAHHHH!" starts Owen.
Oh goodie.
He is not much of a fan of outings yet. Give him time. Carter just looks at him like he is a disgusting slime creature and covers his ears. "Baby pry!", he says. Sigh. Yes, here we go, baby cry.
So we get doughnuts and wolf them down to the sound of Owen's tears. Then he stops.
"Yeeeah! Baby stop pry!", Carter yells.
Yeah!
But then he starts wailing again. Oh well.
Carter doesn't look pleased.
"Wanna get a special drink?", I ask him. "Yeah brink!" he yells (he yells everything these days)
He is so damn excited just to do something that 2 drive thru trips for a doughnut and a smoothie are the highlights of his day I guess. Off to Smoothie King! (Thank goodness for drive thrus, what would a mother do without them?)
Anyway, we are lame. We got our treats and came home to catch Caillou and nurse the screaming infant....again.
Lunch, you ask? Oh. Yes, well lunch was a doughnut, a smoothie and goldfish crackers. Wonderful mother I am. I topped mine off with a hunk of stale french bread. Gourmet.

Settling in with the boys
He really gets a kick out of "helping" me change Owen's diaper and especiall when he goes "PooPoo!". I guess this is thrilling to a 2 year old boy.
Last night we went downtown to listen to some music in the park and Carter had a good time being a Big Boy hanging out with his daddy by the stage. He was slapping his knee to the music and clapping. Hilarious. I hung back with my wide-eyed 2 1/2 week old and self-consciously tried to suck in large Buddha Belly. I am still sportin' mostly maternity gear, folks. Already very impatient to just be back to normal! I actually tried to put on my maternity jeans....and they didn't fit. They were too tight. Yup. Too small. Maternity clothes were too small for a woman who isn't pregnant anymore. Oh my freakin lord. Hi, I'm Fatty McFattyfoo! How ya been? Anyone see a cheesecake around?

Owen has been a complete fussbuster the last two days. Maybe it's a growth spurt or maybe it's something in my diet. I can't expect a newbie to be consistent, can I? But damn, I was really liking the 2-3 hour sleep sessions I was getting. sigh. Now it's back to erratic "Feed me!!" cries at all hours. Oh well, I've gone without sleep before. It's all been done. I will one day sleep. Then my husband will really owe me big. :)
I will download the camera in the next couple of days (I'm a lazy ass) and post some pictures. Promise.

Target bound
I left the house today with 2 babies, a couple of snacks and a mission. I needed 3 birthday cards and I needed them from Target. I suppose I could have gotten them from somewhere else closer to home but I wanted a good selection and I also wanted to check out Halloween costumes.....and really, I just plain miss Target. So Kevin agrees to meet me there so that my first outing with 2 won't end in complete disaster. Yeah!
I know I didn't do it all by myself but it sure felt like I accomplished something Big. I just had to get that first outing out of the way. It's almost like losing ones virginity (TMI) or when the doctor gives you the go ahead to have "personal time" with your husband again after childbirth (really TMI). Just get it over with and the next time won't be so bad, right?
Only one minor temper tantrum from the 2 year old and some minor screaming from the 2 week old. However, I was exhausted and sweating (damn hormonal dump) by the time we got back in the van.
Okay, now I'm thinking big. The zoo next? or the park?
Hmmm.
I may have to use our toddler leash a bit more now. I can't run after Carter while toting a baby in a carrier. It's bad enough seeing me breastfeeding one while dragging the other through the house to his Time Out chair for throwing things....again. We are having issues. Tantrums and Terrors. I'm lost in them all. Night terrors scare me and tantrums piss me off. Amazingly little Owen slept through a 35 minute screaming fit last night and most of the day tantrums he just kind of blinks and rolls his eyes at, like "gimme a break, kid! I'm trying to eat here..."
Definitely dealing with high emotions in our Big Guy. It breaks my heart to see him so worked up. In fact I may be shopping for toddler sized straight jackets if this keeps up. It's freakin weird. He kicked daddy in the face last night and drove him to the the guest bed. Good grief. I'm just gonna give it time and hope that we all settle into a schedule. I just wish Carter would nap during the day more often. Today he did and everything was less traumatic by far. I wonder how tonight will go.... They say the night terrors are tied to little ones needing more sleep and quiet time. Mommy needs some, too. :)
Well, I can only be so many people in so many places at once. I will just try to be 100% mommy to both of the boys 100% of the time. Easy peasy.

Differing personalities already
When Carter was a baby baby I had to carry him everywhere with me or else he screamed. He would only sleep ON me or at my bosom (which he never willingly parted with).
I just knew (mostly out of necessity) that this 2nd child would be a little more laidback. I mean he does fuss and cry but compared to his older brother at this age.....phew, what a difference.
Already, little O has grown out of his newborn diapers and a couple of newborn onesies. This is hilarious...he is so much longer than Carter was. I could go on and on about all of these little things and I really look forward to all the comparisons I'll be making in the future. This is fun. ahem. This is also very hard. What a dichotomy! (oh! the nostalgic use of college paper words...I'm a nerd)
Back to business
Anyway, our first couple of weeks at home have been interesting. Carter loves his little brother and tells him "Is Otay baby Oooowen, Don't cry baby" and he loves to give him hugs and kisses. Sometimes he brings him toys to play with and he will talk to him while he is in his bouncy seat. It's so cute.
However, I think he must be internalizing some feelings because he has been having demented freak out fits multiple times during the day and night. The night ones are worse and scare the crap out of Kevin and I. Also, since I don't have the free time to wrestle him down for his nap this means he has stopped taking one. Joy. Previously he would take a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon but he was going to bed really late. Now he is a No Nap boy but he goes to bed a little earlier....oftentimes he will then wake in the middle of the night with some sort of night terror. It's awful. I'm hoping it will pass soon.
Our little 2 week old has already had his first sickness given to him by his older brother. I sent Kevin and Carter to Chuck E Cheese last week so I could have some free time at home with the little guy and I guess Carter brought home the "ChuckECheese disease". I was frantic with worry that our newest addition would get the fever but he just got the cold symptoms. Phew. Now it seems we are all better.
Our sleeping arrangement is still being tested. When Carter was sick I moved me and the babes to the couch to kinda keep them seperated and Owen was waking up so much in his baby misery it made the most sense. Last night I moved between the couch and the bed. Back and forth. I swear I intend to sleep one of these days. This is harder the second time around.
